    • We are currently pioneering ways to cut new plastic sets in PETG. Initial tests look very promising.
  • Wood Shop Committee
    • Woodshop has recently seen a large increase in project activity, as a result of lots of new member signups, increased opportunities for training, and because, well, people love to work with wood. This success has brought with it new problems, and so the Woodshop has spent time planning and discussing ways to address these. At our current activity level, it’s just too much for any one person to do effectively, and so the Committee Chairman has begun delegating duties to responsible Committee members, and wants to increase emphasis on development of an effective Shop Committee, and planning, to deal with the increased level of activity.
      • Woodshop is currently focused on the following areas of development:
        • Safety in the shop
        • Expand Training opportunities, offer more classes
          • Woodshop currently offers two “Woodshop Basics” classes per week, and is considering adding a third class. This class was developed by Brian Stout and Tom Cook, and focuses on shop safety, a consistent set of rules and practices, and fundamental use of tools. These classes are two hours long, are a prerequisite to tool use in the shop by all members, and fill up almost instantly when posted. We’ve recently completed training of five more instructors.
          • We’re now doing two Lathe Basics classes per week, and the demand for this class is also very high. Two more Instructors have been trained.
          • Wood Carving continues to be a very popular class, taught once per week
          • We just added a new Pen Turning class, with two instructors.
          • We’re planning to add more classes, on topics like: Joinery, Use of Hand Tools, Finishing, and more. We’re actively recruiting new instructors for these classes.
        • Improve maintenance
          • Rapidly increasing participation is causing an increase in broken tooling and maintenance costs. Regular scheduled maintenance, improved training, floor oversight, and improved planning are needed.
        • Re-organize the shop space
          • New floor layout
          • New dust collection layout
          • New power layout
          • Plan for new tool locations in advance
        • Strengthen the Committee, to improve participation in:
          • Maintenance of Tools
          • Recruitment of Qualified Teachers
          • Training of new Teachers
          • Streamline purchasing and supply acquisition
          • Distribution of information
          • Improve scheduling
          • Improve social opportunities and project cooperation
        • Develop long range capital purchasing plan. Tooling in the shop is expensive, and continuously surprising the Board with random purchase requests doesn’t help.
          • Define current and future needs
          • Prioritize purchases
          • Plan for space and maintenance costs
          • Submit plan to Board for approval and scheduling
