It is once again time for the annual Board of Directors election.

In order to vote in the election or run for the Board of Directors, you must be a voting member. Members eligible for voting rights are those that have been members in good standing for at least 3 months and who are on the Standard or Starving Hacker rate. Members who are on the $10 family member add-on or a Corporate Membership are not eligible. Voting will be held online using our voting system, please check to ensure that you can login prior to the election:

How do I request voting rights?

If you are eligible for voting rights and wish to request them, please send an email to either [email protected] or [email protected] before voting begins. Please note, you may request or drop voting rights at any time, but our bylaws require at least 1/3 of all voting members to be present for a membership meeting (or board vote) to be held. As such, please relinquish voting rights if you do not plan on voting and attending membership meetings (held on the 2nd Thursday of each month).

Please note: It takes time for us to verify you are eligible for voting rights and to add you to the system, so please do not wait until the last second to request voting rights.

Additionally, once your ballot is cast it can not be changed.

When is voting?

Voting begins just before this meeting, on Thursday April 9th at 7pm and ends the following Thursday (April 16th) at 7pm.

    • Amateur Radio Committee meeting this Saturday, April 11th at 10:00am
      • Goal is to internally decide on new Amateur Radio Committee Chair
  • Aerospace Committee - Romeo Espana
  • Automotive Committee - Brandon Green
    • Rule clarifications:
      • You should not leave a vehicle inside overnight, due to fire dangers of unattended gas tank being indoors and the limited amount of space we have to share between all members.
      • This limits the kind of work we can do here and means we can no longer do some of the projects that we recently did.
      • You must be the one working on your vehicle, you take full responsibility for anything done to your vehicle
      • If you come here to change your oil (you must take used oil with you) and then someone distracts you and you don't put in new oil and then drive off, destroying your engine, that is solely your responsibility
    • Got lots of new ryobi tools
    • Got new tool box and starting stocking it with tools, most auto tools are marked with green paint, please return every tool when you are not using it to its original location
      • If you feel you are not capable of returning a tool when not in use, or that is too much of a burden, then you are not welcome to use auto tools
    • Classes are currently not scheduled due to needing to work through liability implications of someone blaming DMS for teaching them to do something incorrectly and then harming a 3rd party
    • We will be taking the DMS Racing 240sx to NTAXS event #2, anyone else who would like to autox is encouraged to register now so they can attend
  • Bio Committee - David Ratcliff (interim)
    • Area in clean-up and reorganization mode which has to come first to make space.
    • Aquaponics system gen2 under construction
    • Classes under planning for Aquaponics, Permaculture, Homebrewing during April.
    • Scientific Computing Interest Group currently sharing space while constructing supercomputer and CCNA(Cisco cert) hardware lab.
  • Civic Hacking - Stephen Wylie
    • We hosted the Maptime Dallas meetup group on 3/18 and had an Open Hack night on various Web mapping tools that involved little to no programming whatsoever, such as GeoJSON.io and Leaflet.js.
    • We will be hosting Maptime Dallas again here at DMS on 4/15, and will have an Open Hack night again! We plan to get a little more into programming with Leaflet and D3.js, and will have plenty of fun datasets for folks to play with.
    • There are several projects in flight. If you are interested in helping with these projects, come out to the Maptime event next week or hit up Stephen on the Talk page!
      • YouzAt -- a neighborhood mapper
      • "N Minutes From the Makerspace" -- where we map out interesting places to go that are N minutes (e.g. {5, 10}) away
      • "Makers Markers", a crowdsourced & indexed map of supply and project stores around DMS that people could use to buy materials near DMS or near home
  • Classroom Committee - Gus Reiter
    • Thanks for the tables in the Interactive Classroom
    • about to start a project to save the Projector in the Lecture Hall by hooking up an embedded Linux box up the it which will also tap into the calendar.
  • Creative Arts Committee - Haley Moore
    • Arts committee met on Tuesday to discuss the following:
    • Elected Haley Moore and Nicole Franczvai as committee co chairs.
    • Established a fund to stock the room with painting and drawing supplies for general use.
    • Discussed needs for a more mature sewing space, which includes extra table space, a serger, ironing board, and a dedicated sewing machine work station. We are also looking for a teacher to hold more Intro to Sewing classes.
    • Steve Reeves and Nicole are planning to hold a gallery show featuring art from DMS members at the end of May.
    • Proposed to move arts. The arts room finds itself with more tools and demand for new equipment than the current space can provide, and insufficient space for members to work on larger projects. The plan is to move arts into the current Fortress of Solitude and convert the current art room to classroom/flex space.
  • Electronics Robotics Committee - Ken Purcell
    • The Rigol Oscilloscope has arrived!
    • Rick Salberg of Hakko USA is working on a proposal to outfit the e-Lab, Vector & Stained Glass with proper soldering irons and maybe small hand tools.
    • Had a committee meeting and Ken Purcell was nominated to continue as committee chair.
    • Working on a prototype sign to go over the Electronics Room door. Possible group software project to bring DMS Talk electronics discussion to display on sign.
    • Continued process to acquire basic tools and equipment from gracious allotment from the BOD.
    • New e-Lab PC being built for micro-controller programing, datasheet library and labeler station.
  • Financial Committee - Benjamin Groves
    • Still working on reconciling the clearing errors from February
    • Paul, Allen, Ben will meet at the DMS on Sunday to start preparing our 2014 taxes
  • Foundry Committee - John Kuhlenschmidt
    • Will have two class for April
    • Sat 11 Introduction to Lampwork Beads
    • Sun 19 Intro to Stained Glass

    • Also got a new Brent wheel & had a committee meeting.
  • Laser Committee - William Petefish
    • New autofocus assemblies have arrived
    • Lasersaur parts are starting to come in
    • We now have a support e-mail. ([email protected])
    • Scheduling a Maintainer's Class. (specifically on maintaining the laser.)
      • Prerequesites are: On the Laser Committee, Certified to operate the laser
  • Machine Shop Committee - Bryan Gangwere
    • Ordered ~$1000 of new and replacement tooling
    • Created page where members can report broken or missing tools and equipment
    • Started rebuilding the South Bend lathe
    • Purchased safety guards for the horizontal band saw
    • Defined rules for machine shop and are working on creating signage
  • Metal Shop Committee - Danny Meeks
  • Operations and Facilities Committee - Andrew LeCody
    • Had a switch die on us which took down a large segment of the network, thank you Brooks and Stan for getting this resolved
    • Landlord is installing rear lighting per our request.
    • Fixed clogged toilet in women's restroom
    • To help address urgent issues, Brooks has created a number for members to call that will forward to members of Operations.
      • This number would be for urgent issues only
      • There are "shifts" for daytime (8am to 10pm) and night (10pm to 8am)

  • Public Relations Committee - Steve Blanchard
  • VECTOR Committee - Nicholas Schell
    • Committee meeting 4/2/2015 nominated Nicholas Schell for second term as committee chairperson.
    • New eye-catching promotional video display and materials needed for DMS/VECTOR at future events. Must coordinate with PR committee.
    • Speed King project removed.
    • Gold Wings refurbishment going well. Has been LED'ed, power supply upgraded, playfield touched up/waxed. Now servicing mechs and playfield parts.
    • Snow Derby playfield cleanup largely complete. Will move on to scoring reel servicing w/Mitch.
    • VECTOR spare parts repository will bring in new members and strengthen our offerings. New members would be able to bring in a machine and restore on-site.
  • Wood Shop Committee - Alex Rhodes
    • Dan Henderson will be taking over as Chairman
    • CNC Router training has begun
    • Wood shop 101 training is still continuing.

Discuss Access Policy for Security Cameras (Allen Wan)

Problem: At least one and likely multiple people on the Operations committee have been found snooping on members using the security cameras for non-security purposes.

In the past when less evidence was available, Operations usually denied that such activities occurred. After the alleged snooping during the last Operations committee meeting, there are now Operations members who have acknowledged that the snooping happened and that the practice is wide spread.

Enforcing punishment against members who abuse their privileges appears futile. Despite the present understanding that the cameras would be used only for security purposes, there has been no way to effectively police the matter, and it has proved difficult to rebut denials that snooping occurred. Additionally, Operations being the normal enforcement arm of the Space could not be counted on to enforce rules against itself.

Solution 1: Explicitly allow watching members via the security cameras for any reason. Rational: This brings transparency to the current practice by explicitly acknowledging it. It is the easiest to implement and alleviates any additional enforcement activity.

Solution 2: Allow all members access to the cameras for any reason. Rational: Allowing all members access some have suggested would be more transparent than the current practice of having highly restrictive access.

Solution 3: Create a yet to be decided accountability regime where access must be logged and/or done in a group and a specific reason must be given to access the cameras. Rational: Creating a more complicated enforcement regime seems unlikely to be enforced and will likely simply revert to the status quo where the current practice continues while being denied.

Solution 4: It's a discussion. Come with your ideas.
