Makerspace Status Update for Monday Mar 29

Time for a weekly Makerspace update

Next Meeting:

Topic: Brainstorming for Earth Day
When: Thursday, April 1, 7pm
Where: Company|Dallas 1701 N Collins Blvd, Richardson, TX 75080

We’ll be doing a DPRG / Makerspace table at the Oak Cliff Earth Day
event on April 18. We’d like to come up with some cool ideas to draw
attention to the Makerspace. Ideas floated so far include fusing
recycled plastic bags into sewable fabric, making an outfit from the
fused fabric, making kites from recycled plastic bags, adapting the
Noise Boundary autonomous glockenspiel to simulate wind chimes with a
wind sensor as input, using recycled plastic water bottles to build a
hydroponics system, showing robot art made from recycled found
objects, showing discarded vintage cameras we put to use again. We
need more ideas. We need ideas that you’re willing to work on and
complete in time to show them on the 18th.

We’ll also cover the usual makerspace topics such as introductions of
visitors and progress reports on finding space and raising money.

Another new member since last week! We’d hoped to reach 30 members by
the end of March but we’re only halfway there. Based on the startup
times of other hackerspaces, we’re still ahead of the curve. But it
looks like we’re facing the choice of moving our schedule back another
month or settling for a smaller space than we’d like. We may do a
combination; wait another couple of weeks for members and then make
due with as much space as we can afford based on the number of members
we have at that point. Settling for a smaller space means we may need
to cap membership to prevent overloading the space. So anyone on the
list who hasn’t become a member yet but wants to, should think about
joining in the next couple of weeks to make sure you get in.

You can keep up with all the lastest on the Wiki, twitter, or irc.

Membership Update

Current members: 13
Member Goal: 30
Member list:

Come on folks, if you haven’t joined yet, please do so today. We’re
asking for a one-time up front donation of $100 or whatever you can
afford to help us reach our startup fund goal. After that, there will
be a monthly membership fee in the $30-40 range, depending on how many
members we have when we get our space. If there’s something you’d like
to see happen before you plunk down your hard earned money to join up,
let us know what is and we’ll try to address it.

Startup Fund Update

DPRG contribution: $1000
Member donations: $2200
Supporter donations: $135

Total: $3335
Goal : $6000

We’re over halfway there! We know these aren’t the best times
financially for non-profits to ask for donations but if you can
squeeze out a few dollars, you’re helping to create a group that could
potentially have a big impact on Dallas and make our city a more
interesting place to live. Any donation will help, however small. To
make a donation, visit the DPRG’s Dallas Makerspace project page:
