This page provides a basic overview of how I setup my Ubuntu desktops. Typically I will start with the alternate installer, as I typically setup encrypted LVM for mobile systems and software raid for desktops.

For mobile systems, I enable ufw:

Look And Feel
For multi-monitor setups I disable sticky edges and set the launcher to only show up on the primary monitor. This is done via System Settings > Displays. Almost every other aesthetic change has to be made using the Ubuntu Tweak application.
Time
I like to use 24 hour time, and have the clock show the weekday and date/month. These settings can be changed via System Settings > Time & Date
Fonts
| Setting | Font | Size |
|---|---|---|
| Default | Ubuntu | 8 |
| Desktop | Sans | 8 |
| Monospace | Ubuntu Mono | 9 |
| Document | Sans | 8 |
| Window title bar | Ubuntu Bold | 9 |
Theme
I have created a theme called Ambiance-Shiki that is a combination of the AmbianceOneiric and Shiki-Colors themes.
Installing the theme is easy, first I create ~/.themes if it doesn't exist. Next I download the latest version from my Github repo, and extract the Ambiance-Shiki-* folders to my ~/.themes folder.
Then, from Ubuntu Tweak I set the Gtk theme and Window theme to the flavor of Ambiance-Shiki I want to use.
Finally, I prefer to have the window controls on the right, which can be changed via Ubuntu Tweak > Window.
